My top 8 self-development books
As a child I was a huge fan of books. I learned how to read and write before I even started the 1st grade. Books would take me into this magic world, where everything was possible, I would let my imagination flow and discover new worlds and adventures.
As I grew older, my passion for books never fade it away, it become stronger. About 4 years ago, I felt into depression, and one of the most powerful methods that help me overcome my depression was when I discovered SELF-DEVELOPMENT books. Alongside meditating, journaling, exercising and visualizing, reading has been my most important ways to self recovery.
When I felt in depression, I had to make the decision of taking 6 months of, to heal myself. I moved back home, Argentina, to my MOM’s house, I needed to go back to my roots and reconnect with myself and my family, my biggest WHY.
A good friend of mine, since we were little wild girls, was going through the same; so she reached out to me and gifted me one of my most precious books “YOU CAN HEAL YOUR LIFE”, by Louise Hay. This particular book has become my bible, I carry it with me everywhere I go.
I created this list of my top ten books that have helped me on my journey to rediscover myself, understand who I am, where I come from and most importantly, find my passion and my mission in life; and today I will love to share them with you and hope that it could make a difference in your life, like it has for mines.
Here are my personal interpretations of these life changing books.
“YOU CAN HEAL YOUR LIFE”, by Louise HAY
When I was first given this book I didn’t know what to expect. I had no idea what self-development was or what it entitled. But since I loved reading so much, I thought I’ll try it, at that stage of my life I would have done anything not to feel that way again.
This book has taught me so much about myself, about who I am and where I come from. This book teaches you how to forgive your self, and your roots. Specially your parents; most people like to blame their failures and challenges on someone else, and it’s just human nature, that’s the way we are programmed.
Through “YOU CAN HEAL YOUR LIFE”, I learned that every feeling and emotion that we go through is hidden behind something we have experienced before, in numerous occasions, so when we go through a specific situation where we feel sadness or anger, is usually due to an old memory or experience that is stored in the back of our minds. This book teaches you to confront this situations from a place of love and ease, understanding why someone else could do the things they do, instead of blaming them or feeling resentment towards them.
This book also has a guide for every illness there is, and gives a detail explanation of why these illness are formed and a positive affirmation to use to confront this feelings.

“THE ART OF HAPPINESS”, by Dalai Lama and Howard C. Cutler
This book, like the previous I have mentioned, have helped me hugely on my journey to strength. In this book, the reporter Howard C. Cutler follows the Dalai Lama to some of his events and gets the interviews him.
The book shows the huge difference between the way the Western and Eastern worlds sees life and interpret human behaviors; and how both cultures deal with pain and psychology in different ways.
The East believes that most of our sufferings are caused by experiences that our ancestors might have gone through and not only our own experiences. In this book, the Dalai Lama offers his views on how to learn to forgive and understand one self and the human nature as it is.
“THE ART OF HAPPINESS” will teach you how to be more compassionate and kind. On how to put yourself in someone else shoes and understand why they are the way they are and their sufferings and actions.
This book has definitely helped me open my heart, and live a life of ease, by forgiving and moving on.
“HOW TO GET WHAT YOU WANT AND WANT WHAT YOU HAVE”, by John Gray
Most of people live their life always wanting more; working extra hours to pay for materialistic things; to have the best of the best; and in a way, there’s nothing wrong with that. Is good to aim for better things in our lives; but some times we have to stop and realize what are we giving up to have all these nice things.
Most of people, in the pursuit of wanting more, forget that what they now have, is what at some point they wanted, and now have it and don’t enjoy it, because they are always seeking for something that they don’t have yet.
Happiness is in recognizing your achievements, small or big; recognizing the people who love you; spending time with them; because as we most know, TIME is something that no money in the world can buy.
While I read this book, I started appreciating all the things I was taking for granted in my life. Things such as my health, the fact that I was breathing, having a roof above my head and food every day; I started appreciating the moments I got to share with the people I loved, with my friends and family; and most importantly I started appreciating the fact that my life was absolutely beautiful and that I have achieved one of the most important things for myself, I was loving myself more than I have ever done before.
This book will remind you to live and cherish every moment and experience in your life.
“THE MONK WHO SOLD HIS FERRARI”, by Robin Sharma
As I am writing this blog, I realized that this books have chosen me throughout my journey. And each and every one have made a huge impact on my journey.
“The Monk who sold his Ferrari”, is the story of a successful lawyer that had it all, money, success, women, best cars, best meals, best clothes, the best that money can buy; except for freedom and happiness.
At a point of his career, looking and feeling much older than his actual age, he decides to give it all up and go on a conquest to find himself and the meaning of life.
After years of traveling, he returns to the city where it had all began, and visits one of his oldest friends, who at one point, was his protege. In their encounter, he begins by telling him about his adventures and how he has found true happiness and meaning of life.
In this book, you’ll learn the 5 top rituals that successful people follow to be able to live a life of fulfillment and balance; to be able to become the best version of yourself and inspire others to do so.
“BIG MAGIC, by Elizabert Gilbert
Elizabeth Gilbert is also the author of the famous book made into a movie “EAT, PRAY AND LOVE”, starting Julia Roberts.
When I first seen this book “BIG MAGIC”, I didn’t know who Elizabeth Gilbert was, I bought it because I loved the title and my hands didn’t seem to wanting to put it back in the shelf. As soon as I started reading this book, I felt in love with the author and her story. I use this book as a self guide for when I don’t feel that inspired or I’m having a day with less motivation. And I really believe that Elizabeth Gilbert wrote this book with exactly that intention.
In this book, the author tells her story on how she became a writer, what was the force driving her to pursue her dreams and not giving up. Elizabeth Gilbert emphasizes the importance to live to your full potential and follow your dreams and passion. To live the life you design to live and that everything is possible when you put your full heart and love into it.
“START WITH WHY”, by Simon Sinek
Start with Why, will help you do exactly that, find the main reason WHY you want to change your life and make improvements. A lot of the example that this book gives, are related to business; but if you can see past that, and implement the same principles in your life, you’ll be able to understand that we all have a strong force that drives us, makes us get out of bed every morning and believe in ourselves.
This book will teach you to create a mission statement for your life; and if you are in business, this book is perfect for it.
The reason I chose this book is because when I started my first business, I wasn’t quite sure of the WHY my business could make an impact on someone else life. I knew HOW to do it but I had to be clearer in WHY I did it. Now my WHY applies to all aspects of my life, personal and business; and it’s my family, my MOM and my SISTER are my muse, my driving force, the WHY I want to be a better me and create a better life.
“THE CONFIDENCE TO SUCCEED”, by Donna Kennedy.
Donna Kennedy is one of Ireland top Personal and Business development coaches. She is a 3 times best-selling author; and she is one of the first speakers I had the honor to meet, and she blew my mind, her life story is fascinating.
In this book, she tells us her story and how she overcame some of her biggest struggles.
This book is more of a workbook, full of blank spaces that you need to fill in to make the most out of this book. It’s a book to remind us of how amazing we are, and how strong we can become.
Some of the exercises consist on writing a list of your biggest achievements, from the moment you were born, with things as simple as learning how to walk and talk; some of the biggest achievements that at times we take for granted.
This workbook will help you empower and strengthen your mindset and soul; but as I said before, make sure you don’t just scroll through it, FILL IN THE BLANKS.
“THE MIRACLE MORNING”, by Hal Elrod
I’ve never been a fan of the morning, since I was a little girl it was always a struggle to get me out to bed to go to school, and it wasn’t because of school (I was a nerd, still am, I loved school), it was the dark winter mornings that made it difficult for me. As I grew up, I made sure I found a job that didn’t require getting up in the mornings, so for years I worked in bars and restaurants that only opened in the evenings; until I started my own business, and read this book, I didn’t know how magical and powerful the mornings could be.
Hal Elrod story will leave you speechless, such an amazing man. In this book he shares the steps he created to overcome the challenges life has thrown his was since a young age. He’s a true inspiration and once you start implementing his strategies, you’ll realized how much time there actually is in 24 hours and how to spend them wisely.
This book will teach you the importance of keeping a strong mindset and how to create it by following a morning routine.
Trust me, your morning will never be the same again!
